Today we worked so, so hard on our quick start page and our stations, that we completely ran out of time to even read our book! It also seems I forgot to include the QR codes this week (my mind must already be on fall break! We also played a new game that I'm hoping to get on my YouTube channel as soon as possible. It was very fun!

Wow! This class is really exceeding my expectations for reading and writing! I am so proud of them. This week, we're working on the following phonics skills:

Since 9/15 is International Dot Day, we listened to The Dot by Peter Reynolds. It's a great book about just trying our best and giving hard things a shot! We practiced adding the word "yet" to our "I can't statements," so someone might say, "I can't draw," but we practiced saying, "I can't draw yet," which lets us know we are learning. I listened to several ROCKSTAR READERS as well! I was so happy with how well everyone is reading and writing so well! I also have a new video for a great game that is versitile for all ages of readers and spellers!
Today we met Penelope Rex. She loves ponies and children---because they are both DELICIOUS!!! We read an adorable book (one of Dr. Rowe's favorites) about a T-Rex who goes to school. We also worked on the following skills:
K-SATPIN (Names and Sounds)
1st- CVC words
2nd-phoneme segmenting and manipulation (fancy way of saying, "Changing words by adding, subtracting, or changing letters."
We had a great first day in Beginning Reading! We learned about 5 Star coloring and how we were all going to be 5 Star colorers this year! We also learned about smartie spelling! We practiced looking for our friends' names in a word search (this was a challenge). Finally we listened to a story about a brand new school!
For HW this week I have sent home a diagnostic assessment. I personally made sure this ended up in your child's backpack. This is very important. Please read the front of the packet and follow the directions. Please do not help your child with any of the answers! It is completely fine if they miss every single thing you ask them! This is really more just to help me understand exactly where your child needs to be and how he/she learns best.
One plea--Please work with your student on getting ALL their things together and in their backpack in a timely fashion. Make sure all binders/folders can actually fit in bookbags and make sure they can get everything packed up in about 5 minutes. Thank you for practicing this at home!
