Today was a fun day! We worked in some groups to discuss the topics and questions we'd like to have answered in this class. Then we tried to see what everyone knew about this time period by playing "Find Someone Who...." Students also received their notebooks today. This notebook contains the entire semester's worth of work, so please make sure you keep up with it. If you lose your notebook, it is a $40 replacement fee. Please also bring this to class each week. You are free to write in it (on all the pages--front & back). You can highlight in it and take notes in the margins! If you are looking to make this course more challenging---See the "CHALLENGE ME" section below.
For "at-home" work this week, please do the following pages Unit 1: Colonization-read the information, Skip the page with the Hexagons.
Read & Do all of Concept 2: Plymouth Colony & a New Life for freedom & Faith.
Read & Do all of Concept 3 Massachusetts Bay Colony, Classroom Courtroom, (stop with the three pieces of evidence)
Today we played Timeliner! We'll typically start our class in this way. It's a fun way to orient ourselves with several dates and important events from US History. We also worked in groups to make connections between the causes and effects of much of the settlement of Jamestown. For HW, please complete Concept 3: Salem Witch Trials-Fear Replaced Reason all the way through Concept 6: A Colony Built on Peach and Tolerance. We will not meet next Monday (off for Labor Day).
Today we continued to play Timerliner and then we discussed the established colonies of Connecticut, Rhode Island, and Pennsylvania. We also discussed how the immigrants that lived in those colonies helped to establish the culture of those colonies. For HW, please complete concepts 7-9.
Today we reviewed the 13 colonies and what each was known for in terms of economy, society, and politically. We will have a test in class on 9/29 (The Monday before Fall Break). HW is Concept 10-12.
Today we played a fun history review game to prepare for our next test, which will be on Monday. We also discussed HOW we should study for a test. The students had some really good ideas, so hopefully, they will put those into practice. Everyone has a review guide to complete for HW this week!
Today we took our first test! There is no homework for Fall break! See ya in two weeks!
Today we went over our test (somewhat). Students can revise any questions they made an 80 or lower on. They must revise in a different color and NOT ERASE ANY ORIGINAL WORK. That is also due next week. Students can earn points back on the test for completing this task. Students may not redo the matching or extra credit portions. Additionally, students need to complete their notebook work for this week, which is concepts 1-4 of Unit Two (Revolutionary War)!
Today we spent most of our class time reviewing how to construct a timeline. There is always an extra credit timeline question on the test (hint, memorize Declaration of Independence, Constitution, and 19th Amendment dates) and most students had a challenging time organizing the information on a timeline. We had spooky dates from History, so students had to determine the date of the spooky event and then construct a timeline. Then we spend a bit of time discussing what lead up to the Revolutionary War. We will spend a bit more time here next week. For HW this week, students need to complete Concepts 5 & 6.
Today we went over specific parts of the Declaration of Independence and then discussed which colonists would be in agreement with these grievances. I will be offering extra credit to anyone who can memorize the preamble to the constitution by 11/24. Additionally, we will have our next test on November 10th. For homework this week, we will complete Concept 7 & 8.
Today we played a review game to prepare for our test. Make sure notebooks are ready for the notebook check next week and study, study, study!
Today we took our test number 2 during class time. For HW, students need to complete Concepts 1-3 of the next unit which is Unit Three--A New Nation. Madison & Washington and the Preamble to the Constutition.
Today we reviewed our "at home" work and discussed our first president! For HW this week, just complete concept 5, but make sure your one-pagers are AMAZING!
Today we were supposed to have a gallery of our George Washington one-pagers, but half the class did not complete their one-pager, despite this being the only homework last week. At the end of class last week, I specifically challenged the students to "impress me" with their one-pager since this was the only work. Needless to say, it was VERY disappointing to have only half the class do the assigned work for the week. The half that did manage to get their work completed had a gallery of their peers one-pagers, while the remainders worked on the assignment in class. Those that did not have their assignments in class will have a notebook deduction taken on their notebook grade.
If you would like to make this History class even more challenging, you are welcome to complete a podcast response to learn more about history in general. If you can customize your podcast to specifically cover the time period we are studying, you will earn additional points. This is an optional assignment!
Step 1: Listen to the podcast and take notes.
Step 2: Complete the podcast response & bring to class. It should be coloful, neat, detailed, and ACCURATE!
Check out the podcasts below for some ideas!
