Poetry in Motion

Welcome to Class!

4/27

Today we practiced finding syllables of springtime words and we also recalled our rabbit poem lines.  Next week will be our last class and we'll have some funny poems to read and write!

4/13

Today we worked on memorization and being word detectives with our rabbit poems.

4/6

Today we worked on rhymes from our rabbit poem and we also worked on creating couplets, which are two line poems that rhyme and have the same meter.  Most everyone was able to make the rhyme, but the same meter was a challenge!

I would appreciate your feedback regarding my next year's classes.  Thank you!

3/30

Today we practiced reading a new poem, I'm a Little Rabbit--we're getting ready for Easter!  We also spent some time talking about where Easter comes from and play word building games.

3/23

Today we eased our way back into co-op with some open ended play!

3/9

Today we practiced weaving skills by creating an earthworm weaving to go with our poems.  This is the perfect poem for spring! We'll keep working on it once we return from spring break!

3/2

Today we learned about EARTHWORMS! We read a new spring poems about earthworms and then looked at images to show how earthworms dig into the dirt.  Then we read two books about Earthworms (Up in Garden, Down in the Dirt and Diary of a Worm).

2/23

Today we did two new skills with our poem--Word Detective and Poem Puzzle. Everyone did AMAZINGLY at both!  I was so proud at how quickly they picked up on the activities!

2/16

Today we got a new poem called The Dragonfly.  We discussed the vocabulary of the new poem, the rhyming words, and the imagery.  We also extended the rhymes by adding in our own rhymes that (sometimes) followed the same spelling patterns.

2/9

Today we completed a poetry puzzle, which had everyone working together to reassemble the lines of the poem we have been working on.  This was a challenge for some because we had to remember all of the lines in the stanzas.  We also reevaluated the rhyme scheme of the poem.

2/2

This week we learned a new poem type---Acrostics!  Though many of the students had seen this type of poetry before, none of them had written it!  Being a poet proved to be a bit of a challenge this week!

1/26

Today we reviewed our snowy woods poem and we worked on an art piece to accompany the poem.

1/12

Welcome back!  Today we read a new poem, "Stopping By Woods on Snowy Evening," by Robert Frost.  It's one of my favorite poems!  It was pretty funny to read it when it was 60 degrees outside (although I think cold weather is coming!).  We looked for rhymes and then practiced our spelling by playing hangman with the vocabulary from the poem.

1/9

Today, we worked on the tricky sound of Y, since the word SNOWY is in our poem.  We sorted words that started and ended with Y and discovered that Y is a consonant at the beginning of a word and can make MANY sounds at the end of a word, depending on the other letters in the word. Then we started working on a snowy landscape painting.  Maybe we can encourage some snow with our work with Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening!

12/15

Today started off a bit rocky because Dr. Rowe hit major traffic and was LATE!  We ended up saving the last part of class by working on our tricubes and doing a cute Christmas illustration to accompany it!  I hope you all have a lovely holiday season and I am looking forward to seeing you in January!

12/8

Today we worked on various rhyming word pairs and spelling rules. We also reviewed syllabication and dividing words into syllables by making our Christmas Haikus.  We learned a new form of poetry called a tricube, which is three stanzas of three lines, each with three syllables.  It was a challenge, but everyone loved trying to solve the puzzle.

12/1

Today we learned about stanzas in a poem and we also talked about rhyme schemes (AA BB CC DD).

11/17

Today we wrote a Thanksgiving Haiku and a Thanksgiving List poem!  They were delicious....I mean fantastic!  Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!  Thankful for each of you :)

11/10

Today we worked on sensory words about Thanksgiving.  We generated the things we see, smell, hear, taste, and touch at Thanksgiving (or in November).  We will use our list next week to create a list poem and a haiku.  We also started working on an acrostic poem. Finally, we ended the class with some motion and played November charades.

11/3

Today we learned a new poetry form--Haiku!  Haiku is a Japanese counted poetry that consists of three lines (five syllables, seven syllables, and five syllables).  We will keep learn more about haiku next week.

10/27

Today we reviewed rhyming words in When Frankenstein Sat Down to Dine, which is a fun poem we started last week about monsters eating our Halloween candy!  Then we worked on our fine motor, listening comprehension, and following directions by completing a directed drawing of Frankenstein!  He is so cute, and he came home today!  Next week, we'll start our Thanku unit, which focuses on gratitude and the Haiku form of poetry.

10/20

Welcome back!  Today we worked on finishing up our burger poems, which are very fun!  Then we started our new poem about Frankenstein and a bunch of Halloween friends eating up all our Halloween candy!  We were able to add this to our notebook and complete our visual narration and drawing pictures to accompany the poem.

10/6

Today we finished up our "With Everything" poems and started working on the art to accompany these pieces.  Look for these to be near our classroom (or hanging in our classroom) in the near future!  They are spectacular :)

9/29

We worked on our list poems today.  We are writing a poem to mimic Shel Silverstein's "Everything on Top!"

9/22

Today we read a poem by the great Shel Silverstein!  It was called Everything On It and it was pretty funny!  We also learned about the -ake, -ask, and -ing word families.  We drew our visualization of the poem in our poetry notebook as well.  Next week, we'll work on writing our own list poem.

9/15

Today we read "I Caught a Little Poem" by Eve Merriam.  We visualized images while reading and then we noticed a distanct rhythm to the poem, so we made up many lines to fit the rhythm!  We had fun being poets today!

9/8

Today we worked on our biopoem art project!  These will probably be complete next week.  I'd like to leave them on the wall for a bit, so if you're in the building working, feel free to stop by and see them!  We also started working on our first entry of our poetry notebook.  Each week we'll add to this notebook and at the end of the year, students will have an amazing collection of poetry to keep!

9/1

Today we worked on our first original poem.  We're creating a full art experience with it, and it's going to look amazing!  Next week, we continue to work on that piece and start working on our poetry notebooks!

8/25

Today we played a movement game similar to freeze dance, but then we observed our positions and talked about similies and figurative language.  Then we read a book by Peter Reynolds called The Word Collector.  Based upon the book, we listed several words we loved and then made fun combinations of the words into a poem.

8/18

What a great first day of class!  We had a great time getting to know our friends and finding out about one another.  We also started writing our first poem!  Please make sure everyone has pencils, crayons/colored pencils, glue sticks, and scissors for next week! I'm so excited to see what the poets in this class do this year!
