Heroes & Heroines

Welcome to Class!

4/27

Today we worked at cooperative games and stations.  We also sent our workbooks home for the heroes we have learned about this year! Next week is our final class, so we'll have lots of fun reviewing the people we have learned about this year.

4/6 & 4/13

For the past couple of weeks, we've been learning about some important Civil Rights activists.  First, we learned about Rosa Parks and designed a medal for her.  Then, we learned about John F. Kennedy and decoded a quote from him.  We've also been working on noncognitive skills such as, cooperation, teamwork, communication, conflict resolutions, and problem solving.

3/30

Today we learned about Josephine Baker, who was a very famous singer and actress in the 1940s.  She was also a SPY!  We practiced learning about nouns while we learned about her.

3/23

Today we finished up learning about Walt Disney by creating sentences about his life.

3/9

Today we learned about Walt Disney.  We learned that he worked hard as a young man on his newspaper route.  We also learned that he created Oswald the Lucky Rabbit before creating Mickey Mouse, who first appeared in Steamboat Willie.  We watched the short in class!

3/2

Today we learned about the musician George Gershwin.  He is one of the greatest American musicians!  We listened to Rhapsody in Blue and completed a glyph about what we thought.

2/23

Today we learned about the British author, C.S. Lewis, whom many of the students knew from reading The Lion, The Witch, and the Wardrobe.  Did you know Lewis did not write the Chronicles of Narnia until he was 50?

2/16

Today we watched a video of Amelia and Eleanor going for a ride together in an airplane and a car!  Then we created a timeline of the events in Amelia's life.  Students also brought their workbooks home today!

2/9

Today we learned about two great women from history---Eleanor Roosevelt and Amelia Earhart.  We practiced our literacy skills by rearrange sentences that had been mixed up!  We also examined some of our primary source texts to see photographs and diagrams of Amelia Earhart's plane!

2/2

Today we played review games about the people who we have learned about so far this year!  We had a fun time rotating from station to station!

1/19

Today we learned about the artist Pablo Picasso!  We observed some of his art and then we made self portraits in the Cubism style of Picasso.  It was pretty fun to see the creative ideas the students had!  We'll learn a bit more about Picasso next week.  In the meantime, if you'd like to watch a cute video about Picasso, you can find one here

1/12

Welcome back!  Today we learned about Helen Keller, who was quite an amazing lady!  She achieved so much, despite her blindness and deafness.  We learned about Braille and how to sign our names in ASL!  We also learned how a crossword puzzle works!

12/15

Today we had a fun station day.  We built, puzzled, and created marble runs.  We read books and drew pictures.  It was a much needed release at the end of a crazy day!  When we return from break, we will be learning about Helen Keller! I hope you all have a magical holiday season.

12/8

Today we learned about Albert Einstein!  We colored a very funny page in our workbook about Albert Einstein and the kiddos thought he was very silly with his tongue out!  Then we worked on our visual coordination by complete a word search about Einstein.  Some students are starting to write complex sentences about the people we are learning about and they are doing a fabulous job!

12/1

Today we learned about the Wright Brothers, who were the first to fly!  Did you know before they flew, they had a newspaper and a bicycle shop?  They used all the things they had learned from their previous jobs to help them improve their gliders.

11/17

Today we worked on our skeleton and learning some of the bones' names, since we learned about Marie Curie.  We reviewed what contributions she made to science.

11/10

Today we learned about Marie Curie and how to be "Curie-ous"!  We learned many facts about her and then we did a word scramble with the important words from our passage.  When we left, everyone was able to tell me at least one fact about Marie Curie!  We ran out of time to complete our activity for Marie Curie, so we will work on that next week!

11/3

Today we learned about Nellie Bly, who was a journalist.  We practiced interviewing our neighbors and recording their answers, just like an interviewer/journalist would.

10/27

Today we learned more about Henry Ford.  We worked on the literacy skills of writing sentences!  We filled in a graphic organzier about him first and then everyone wrote their sentences.  We ended the day with some open STEM play!

10/20

Today we learned about Henry Ford and the assembly line!  We had a great time making candy cars!

10/6

Today we completed a listening glyph while listening to Debussy's piano piece, Golliwog's Cakewalk.  These were beautiful and a great interpretation of information!

9/29

Today we reviewed information about Jane Addams and also learned a bit about nouns in the process.  We also listened to some compositions of our next hero, Claude Debussy!

9/22

We reviewed Teddy Roosevelt today.  Students had a lot of fine motor practice today because they had to cut word cards apart.  The word cards were scrambled, so students had to read the word cards and then determine the correct order to make a complete sentence.  A lot of students get some practice reading some sight words and basic consonant-vowel-consonant words.  We also read about Jane Addams and learned that she cared about others a great deal!

9/15

Today we learned about Teddy Roosevelt.  Did you know the Teddy bear is named after him?  We made a cute teddy bear puppet and worked on a TON of fine motor skills (Coloring, cutting, hole punching)!

9/8

We learned about an amazing artist today!  Vincent van Gogh!  We learned that he was poor during his life and only sold ONE painting while he was alive.  We also learned that some of his most famous paintings are The Starry Night and Sunflowers.  After learning about van Gogh, we tried our hand at mimicking his short strokes by making our own version of Starry Night on foil.  We used qtips and tried to created lots of swirls and short strokes.  They are really beautiful!

9/1

Today we learned about the amazing Thomas Edison.  We were all surprised to see just how many inventions he made!  Most of us knew about the lightbulb, but we also learned about the phonograph, the telephone transmitter, and the first movie projector, to name a few! We also named words to describe Thomas Edison.

8/25

Today we finished our graph about the professions of the people we will learn about this year.   It's going to be a great year!

8/18

A Fabulous First Day!  Today we had a wonderful first day.  We discussed Dr. Rowe's expectations and rules for the class.  After that, we played a memory matching game with the portraits of people we will learn about in this class.  Some of you have some memory matching geniuses on your hands!  Finally, we started working on a graph of the different jobs of the people we'll be learning about.  We didn't quite get this finished, so we'll finish it up next week! I'm so excited to see what all this class will learn this year!
