High Frequency Hive
Word Game

High Frequency Words (HFW) are those words that we see frequently in texts.  They are sometimes decodable, but sometimes not!  The goal for HFW is to practice them often, so that they become automatic and students do not have to labor to read the word.  Practicing flashcards over and over again can get boring for students and therefore result in a lack of interest or desire to attempt the word.  Practicing HFW through games is my absolutely favorite way to practice sets of words often with multiple repetitions for an extended period of time.  Games are engaging and so much fun!  Often students do not realize they have read the same word over and over again! This game is perfect for practicing HFW and you can customize it to include any HFW your student needs to practice.

Directions:
The student begins at START.  The goal is to make a connecting path to one of the endings on the opposite side of the game board.  Using a spinner populated with the HFW on your game board, have the student spin the spinner and say the word on which the spinner lands.  Then, the student colors in the closest HFW (that they spun) to the start.
The second player spins.  This player's objective is to BLOCK the first player.  Their tiles DO NOT have to connect.
Players take turns with the first player attempting to make a path from beginning to end and the second player attempting to block them.  First players may have to strategize and be flexible in their thinking as their path may become blocked!
