This course is designed for students to have some fun with word play! We will spend the course learning new words (meanings and pronunciations) and applying those to our everyday vocabularies. These courses are more game-like in nature and while there will be some reading and writing, the load of reading and writing will be lower than in other courses. If students are familiar with many words and phrases and have the ability to manipulate words in a number of ways, they will increase in reading and writing confidence.
Payments must be received at least 24 hours before the course begins. Please include course title (including book title) in comments field when purchasing courses.
Week One: We'll go over what makes up words (letters/sounds) and how we can combine letters to make words. We'll also discuss real and nonsense words. Students will play games such as: Scrabble Spell, Build-A-Word, and Roll-A-Word. Each student will also practice writing the words built.
Week Two: This week, we'll build upon the concepts of word construction from week one and begin to manipulate words. We'll change beginning, medial, and final sounds to create new collections of words. Of course, we'll play games as well!
Week Three: Now that we have some basic word building and manipulating practices under our belt, we'll work on organizing words. We'll practice sorting words in a variety of ways, including, but not limited to: sounds, syllables, meanings, relationships. Games will be a part of class once again!
Week Four: This week, we'll review the concepts discussed throughout the course and start to see how those concepts build and relate to one another. We'll also play lots of funny word games such as: Rhyme Time, Word Mix Up, and more!
Week One: We'll begin this course by discussing fragments and how we can add words to complete the sentences. We'll play word games to develop our ability to identify and creatively think about words. We'll also look at Greek and Latin Roots.
Week Two: This week, we'll focus on lists! We'll play a game of list making and discuss how and why we choose the words we choose. We'll also look at what mood and emotions those words evoke (connotation). We'll continue our study of Greek and Latin Roots.
Week Three: We'll build on last week's work of connotations and organize and utilize words based upon their connotations. We'll also work on shades of meaning and how similar words often invoke varied feelings. Of course, we'll continue our study of Greek and Latin Roots.
Week Four: This week, we'll work on prefixes and suffixes and other forms of word morphology. We'll also wrap up our study of Greek and Latin Roots and, of course, we'll play lots of games!
