Students in this course should be able to hold a pencil and should recognize letters and their sounds. We will work with combining letter sounds together to successfully understand word attack skills. Students should also be able to communicate with one another and with Dr. Rowe. Parents are welcome to assist students through the course, including during the online portion of classes. This course is the foundational level course for both reading and writing and will lay the ground work for the subsequent reading and writing classes offered.
If you are unsure of the appropriateness of this course, see the guidelines below to help you. You can also email: katie@rowereads.com for guidance.
Week One: The first week, students will be exposed to several skills which will inform the remainder of the course. For example, we'll discuss print and book awareness, word attack skills, phonemic awareness (sounds of words), and meaning in book. We'll also learn 5-10 sight words.
Week Two: We will review the previous week's skills. In addition, we'll learn about the BIG and the teeny tiny details. We'll look at what we think characters are doing and saying. We'll also learn more sight words.
Week Three: This week, we'll work on adding writing stems to our class (if students are ready), we'll also work on some storytelling skills, and, of course, more sight words!
Week Four: Finally, we'll share our favorite readings and writings in our publishers' party class! Students will share the things they have been writing and reading themselves.
Students enrolled in this course will receive materials to keep.
Checklists are often rigid. It can seem as if it is an all or nothing metric. These checklists are not intended to be used as such. Instead, they should be as a guide to help you understand if the course is appropriate for your child. It is understandable that students may have mastery over half of the metric, but not fully. For example, a student may have mastery of 80% of the alphabet, but not the remaining 20%. Or perhaps your student reverses b and d (which is very, very common). This list is not all or nothing--it's simply a guide. If your student can do the majority of these skills, they are probably ready for the course. If you are unsure, please don't hesitate to email: katie@rowereads.com
